TATA IPL 2024 Match 48 , LSG Vs MI – Match Report

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) clinched a four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. This is LSG’s sixth win in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. 

LSG won the toss and opted to bowl first – having made a few changes to their side. Ashton Turner, Naveen-ul-Haq and Mayank Yadav came into the side for them. MI brought back Gerald Coetzee in place of Luke Wood. LSG’s bowlers put in a good team performance to restrict a dangerous MI batting line-up to only 144 – with the majority of the damage being inflicted in the powerplay. 

Rohit Sharma started off with a scoop to earn a boundary but off the next ball he as he hit it straight to the cover field off Mohsin Khan in the second over. Suryakumar Yadav too started well with a six over the leg-side but Marcus Stoinis responded with his wicket as he cramped him for room and had him edge one down the leg-side to the wicketkeeper. In the last over of the powerplay, it only got worse for MI when Tilak Varma was runout by Ravi Bishnoi. Hardik Pandya walked out and was dismissed first ball as Naveen got an edge through to the wicketkeeper. MI were in big trouble at 28 for four in six overs. 

Nehal Wadhera and Ishan Kishan scripted a recovery of sorts for MI from that situation. Initially, they had to contend with the pace of Mayank, who was making a comeback after injury. They displayed some attacking intent against his pace but Ishan also had some fortune go his way when Turner dropped a chance at deep square-leg. 

The partnership built gradually and added 53 until the 14th over. Ishan (32 off 36 balls) was dismissed when he got a leading edge off Bishnoi and was caught at short third-man. With the slog overs approaching, MI had decided to up the ante. When Mayank came on to bowl the 15th over, Wadhera picked 16 runs – which included two sixes and a four.

Wadhera and Tim David were trying to push MI to a decent score with some hitting in the slog overs. Wadhera was dismissed for a crucial 46 when he was bowled by Mohsin in the 18th over. Mayank returned to castle Nabi in the next over but walked off the field with an injury after that ball. 

David essayed an important cameo in slog overs with an unbeaten 35 off 18 balls. David used the long handle and found the fence four times – featuring three fours and a six. It was an important knock as it pushed MI to 144. 

LSG’s charge towards the target had a difficult start when Arshin Kulkarni was trapped leg-before by the slingy Nuwan Thushara. In the first two overs, the MI bowlers asked the batters many questions. Thushara got movement along with his slingy action. Jasprit Bumrah bowled in the tight channels in the second over. Marcus Stoinis, who walked in at No. 3, got off the mark when he dug out a yorker – and found the inside-edge to the boundary. 

LSG broke the shackles in the fourth over when Stoinis picked two fours off Coetzee. KL Rahul then made an impact when he took on the tricky Thushara in the next over. In all, 20 runs were scored in the over with Rahul smashing a six and three fours. He hit the six over the leg-side but the shot that stood out was a helicopter shot-like loft over mid-on that went for four. As the powerplay came to a close, Stoinis hit Bumrah down the ground for a six. In quick time, LSG had moved to their fifty – which put them on course to victory after an early wicket. 

Soon after the end of the powerplay, Rahul was dismissed for 28 when he tried to hit Hardik over mid-wicket but Nabi took a great catch inches short of the boundary. Stoinis and Hooda then calmly rallied the innings towards the total. 

LSG lost Hooda and Stoinis in quick succession in the 14th and 15th over but they were well on course. Stoinis walked back after scoring an important 62 off 45 balls, featuring seven fours and two sixes. 

Towards the end, Jasprit Bumrah added pressure when he restricted LSG to only a solitary run in the 17th over. The pressure resulted in the wicket of Turner in the next over when he attempted a scoop off Coetzee but was bowled.

LSG now needed 22 off 17. Ayush Badoni played a dot and then got a leg-bye for four down the leg-side before top-edging a pull for another four. This reduced the pressure. In the penultimate over, Badoni was run-out while attempting a second run. Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya, though, made sure there were no more stutters as LSG got home in the last over, overcoming a few tight moments.
